Nick Watney wins the title at Cadillac Championship – Golf news
Nick Watney put up a score of 5-under-par on Sunday to lift the trophy at the Cadillac Championship at TPC Blue Monster. The victory earned him $ 1.4 million worth of prize money and 500 FedEx points.
The 29-year-old American reeled seven birdies and two bogeys to compile a four-day aggregate of 16-under par. He attained that with the help of a carefully designed game plan. Watney teed off from the front, as the greens were comparatively softer in the
early time slot. He fired two back-to-back birdies on the opening holes and carried the momentum until the last hole, where he repeated his formula. In addition to that, he finished first in birdie count, second in putts per Green Hits in Regulation and third
in eagle stats.
Watney has been in strong form right from the time he squashed Lee Westwood in the second round of the Accenture Match Play Championship. His prowess and consistency have come on display during the tournament, especially out at the back nine on Sunday when
he drove his tee shot into a greenside bunker on the 15th hole. He jumped into the trap to wedge the ball out and hit a 24 feet long put for par.
The Californian wrapped the round up with a perfect drive, which left him a few yards away from the green. Watney hit a 5-iron on the fairway, which eventually led him to the final birdie of the tournament.
This was Watney’s third victory as a professional, with the last one at the 2009 Buick Invitational. The player was overjoyed at his success and said, “I definitely felt like I had something for this course. I think I've settled the score."
Victory was long due and it was obvious since the moment he stepped into Sunday with a three-stroke lead and instead carded an 82 to lose the PGA Championship last August. A similar story took place in 2009 event, when Watney finished as a runner-up against
Phil Mickelson.
With this victory, Watney has jumped up in the Official World Golf Rankings and is now placed 15th overall.
