Nick Watney’s blunder on seventh hole cost him victory in the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
A triple bogey on the par-five seventh hole cost Nick Watney the victory in the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Country Club on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
Watney entered the final round of the tournament with a two-stroke deficit to the overnight leader Webb Simpson.
Through six holes, he was one-under for the round. However, the blowout on the seventh hole took him to two-over.
The triple bogey was enough to shatter his confidence and he carded a bogey on the very next hole that he played.
Yet, he tried to control his nerves and managed to record back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th hole.
There was a time when it seemed as if he was returning back to the form. However, it did not happen and he scored another bogey on the 17th hole to finish his campaign at 10-under par overall score.
According to the golf commentators, Watney lost control over his game following his amazing performance in the second round. He carded an eight under-par 64 to take the halfway lead on Friday.
“Well, I played great,” he said on Friday evening while talking to the PGA Tour website. “I hit the ball probably the best I have all year. I putted well, and I'm very, very pleased. But we're only halfway done, so I'm really looking forward to the weekend”.
As opposed to his second-round performance, he mixed four birdies with four bogeys to record an equal-par score on Saturday.
Yet, he was in contention, as he was not far away from the leader. However, he failed to hold his nerves and the final-round pressure took him away from the top position on the leaderboard.
In the meantime, Lee Westwood made a charge to tie for the fifth place after carding a six-under par 66.
Rory McIlroy recorded a score of two-under par 70 to enter the playoffs with DA Points and Rickie Fowler. Thereafter, he lost to Fowler on the first extra hole.
Despite his defeat in the playoffs, he surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings again, replacing Luke Donald.
