Nickel Ashmeade to join New York 100m field at the Adidas Grand Prix - Athletics news
Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica, who displayed a world-class performance at the 200m field while appearing in the JN International Invitational, has announced to join the 100m field at the Adidas Grand Prix. The event will commence on June 11 and is regarded
as the sixth stop of the 14-meeting, Samsung Diamond League Series.
The 21-year old former star of the St. Jago High School was victorious in his first senior title competition in 2009, where he emerged as the Caribbean and Central American Champion in the 200m distance race. Continuing to depict his potential in 2009, he
also won the 200m gold medal at the Pan-Am Juniour Championships. He bagged silver medals in 200m competitions at the IAAF World Junior Championships 2008 and the IAAF World Youth Championships 2007, for the 100m distance categories.
Eyeing the New York 100m field, Ashmeade, along with US 100m record holder, Tyson g*y, has been training and preparing himself under the supervision of Lance Brauman, since January 2010.
Ashmeade, who celebrated his 21st birthday last month, won the Kingston race last week, where he posted a world leading time of 19.95 seconds and improved his previous personal best by about 0.45 seconds. His performance at Kingston was scintillating
as he defeated runners as formidable as world record holder for 100m, Asafa Powell and three-time 200m world champion, Wallace Spearmon.
Commenting upon the performance he showed last week and dedicating his win to her mother, a satisfied Ashmeade said, “I was really amazed, my mom, she was amazed because Sunday was Mother’s Day, as you all know, and that was part of her gift.”
While entering into the 2011 edition of the Adidas Grand Prix, besides g*y, Ashmeade will be facing fierce competition from stellar performers like Blanka Vlasic, Allyson Felix, Jessica Ennis, Sherone Simpson, Jeremy Wariner, Kerron Clement, Abubaker Kaki,
Bershawn Jackson and four-time winner of the Paralympic gold, ‘Blade-Runner’ Oscar Pistorius.
