Nicki Sørensen keen to bag stage win at the Giro d'Italia 2013
Nicki Sorensen of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank eyes the Giro d’Italia stage victories as the biggest goal of his 2012 season.
The cyclist marked his professional debut in 1999 with Team Chicky World and joined Team Fakta in 2000 before pledging his future to Team CSC-Tiscali in 2001.
The 37-year old has seen lot of ups and downs within the team as he sets himself to spend his 12th consecutive season with the team.
The All-rounder’s only victory in the 2012 season was during the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli where he showed tremendous display of his abilities to claim the top podium position.
The Italian event was Sorensen’s last race of the season and hence it was very important for him to grab at least one victory before ending his 2012 campaign.
While commenting on the 2012 season, he stated, “A year in which we didn't have much luck. Some of the strongest riders who were expected to win races this year were out of competition for longer periods of the year due to injuries and other mishaps”.
He stated that Italy is his second home and winning the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli was his first ever professional victory on Italian soil and it means a lot to him.
Nicki’s main role at the Giro d’Italia 2013 will be to help the team leader, Rafał Majka in his GC pursuit, but he will also try to go for a stage victory for himself.
“I believe that Rafa can make a good result in the overall standings if he continues his progress and takes another step up,” he said.
“But I'm looking forward to getting my own chance too. It would be great to take a Giro victory when I have wins in both the Tour and the Vuelta.”
The 37-year-old is a big admirer of Alberto Contador and noted that the Spaniard’s presence makes a huge different in the whole team.
He stated that the good thing about Contador is that, ‘Alberto never gives up’ and is kind of a rider you need to have in your squad as he provides the whole team with that extra bit of energy required to win big events.
