Nico Hulkenberg not getting carried away by Sauber’s pace – Formula 1 news
Nico Hulkenberg is not getting carried away with Sauber’s improved pace in the previous round of the 2014 Formula 1 season in Germany.
According to the young driver, the track conditions could have favoured his team last time around, but the real picture will only be clear after the next couple of races. He claimed, “There might be a few other reasons why we looked stronger at the Nurburgring.
We scored a point there on merit, and could have done better, but the Nurburgring was similar to Shanghai - it was a front-limited circuit.”
He went onto say, “Our performance might be linked to that. We won't know the real answer until the next couple of races.”
Sauber were really impressive during the last season, as the team came close to winning a couple of races. They almost managed to succeed in Malaysia, when Sergio Perez was gaining up on the race leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. However, the former of
the two showed his inexperience, almost crashing out of the race because of a driver error. Luckily, he stayed in the second place and settled for it in the end.
Following that performance, Perez gained quite a lot of confidence and continued his good form until the midseason break. He lost his way to some extent towards the end of the year, but still managed to get the attention of the top teams, earning a contract
with McLaren.
On the other hand, Hulkenberg decided to leave Force India at the end of the last season and decided to race with the promising Sauber. His hopes were shattered though, as he found out that his new car was not competitive enough to fight for points regularly.
Despite that, the German driver continued trying extremely hard and managed to make a decent impression in his home Race at the Nurburgring. He was struggling because of rear tyre wear prior to that race, but Pirelli were asked to change their compounds
for the previous event, which suited quite a few teams including Sauber.
It will be interesting to see how the Swiss team performs in the upcoming Hungarian GP, where new tyres will be introduced by the manufacturers.
