Nico Hulkenberg resolute to get a race seat in 2012
Despite the not so competitive Williams’ car, Nico Hulkenberg kept performing pretty well all through his debut season in Formula 1, last year. Finally, as the season reached its last twists and turns, the German showed his best trick on the track. At the
qualifying session, ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix, he flew his Williams’ car on the track to claim a glorious pole position, beating the top drivers of the season.
However, neither the spectacular pole nor a satisfactory debut season helped the driver safeguard his seat with the team. The British squad, soon after the season ended, signed Pastor Maldonado to replace Hulkenberg in the team owing to the huge sponsorship
the driver promised to bring along.
On the other hand, despite all his high hopes, Hulkenberg failed to secure a main driver’s seat for this season and finally signed a deal with Force India, as its reserve driver. While talking to the media earlier today he accepted that by the mid of last
month, he gave up hopes for being able to stay in the series. Although, he wished for a better place, still the Force India’s offer was nothing less than a blessing for him to stay on the grid. He believes that he has one more chance to prove himself and secure
a better place in the sport for the 2012 season.
He told the reporters earlier today, “I am still in Formula One, even if it is hard to accept not being on the grid any more. I will have the chance to run on Fridays and will do everything possible to put in impressive performances to recommend myself for
a permanent seat in 2012.”
When asked about the upcoming season’s grid, he accepted that there may be some drivers that are not as talented or experienced as he is, but he added that it was useless being frustrated about this now. He refrained from blaming anybody for the present situation
in Formula 1.
Hulkenberg stated, “There are obviously some teams on the grid that seem to need drivers that come with money and that’s a bit sad, as the sport should be driven by talent. Of course it would be preferable in Formula One for the best drivers to compete against
each other with sheer talent alone and not with their wallets.”
Moreover, the young German performed far better than his team’s new permanent driver, Paul di Resta at last week’s Valencia test. Considering his last season’s performance and the current form, he stands as one of the best choices for Lotus Renault GP team,
which needs to fill one of its car’s cockpit. The team’s driver, Robert Kubica met a horrific accident last Sunday, during a rally race, and is not expected to make to the track again until the end of the 2011 season.
