Nico Hulkenberg satisfied with fifth standing in the Brazilian GP – Formula 1 news
Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg has stated that he is satisfied with his fifth place despite leading the race for some time during the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend.
“That was a lot of fun - very entertaining and there was so much happening all the time!” Hulkenberg said. “We had a great chance to finish on the podium today, but it slipped away, which is a shame. In the early laps it was difficult to keep the car on
the track in the very damp conditions, but it was not really wet enough for intermediates and I stuck with the slicks. It was the right decision and soon I was leading the race.”
At one point, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton snatched the lead from the Force India driver and when Hulkenberg tried to regain his position, he ended up colliding with the McLaren which resulted in Hamilton’s retirement from the race. Hulkenberg has admitted that
Hamilton only overtook him as he made a small mistake and he was trying really hard to get back in the lead. He said that it is not possible to say what really happened and that the collision was sudden. After the accident, Hulkenberg was given a drive through
penalty due to which he fell behind and could only finish fifth. The driver said that he still believes that his final standing in the race was a superb way to end this season and that the team put in a brilliant effort.
Force India’s deputy team principal, Robert Fernley, has also appreciated the pace shown by the driver. He said that the pace was enough for him to win the race on Sunday. He admitted that for a moment, the team was expecting to be surprised by Hulkenberg
winning the race since he was showing excellent performance despite the wet and tricky conditions of the Interlagos circuit.
On the other hand, Hamilton has complained about Hulkenberg not apologizing to him for the collision. He blatantly stated that such is the result of driving with less experienced drivers.
The Brazilian GP was the driver’s last race with Force India as he prepares to join the Sauber F1 team from the next season.
