Nico Rosberg: Great weekend in Turkey, optimistic about Sunday’s race – Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP driver, Nico Rosberg hopes for a great race day in Turkey after having an electrifying start to the Friday free practice session.
Rosberg added that the wet and dry tyres have shown good speeds and the race will be interesting.
Mercedes’ duo of Rosberg and Michael Schumacher finished the Friday free practice sessions in top four positions only fractions slower than the fastest driver of the day, Jenson Button of McLaren.
Talking about his performance in the Friday session, Rosberg said, “We have made a decent start to the weekend and I am optimistic for tomorrow. We had a productive afternoon and tried a lot of things with the car. I didn't have too many problems with the
tyres on the long run and I was quite surprised by the grip levels.”
He further added that the grip levels of the wet and dry Pirelli tyres were higher than expected and will be a positive thing on the race day.
Rosberg finished second fastest in the FP2 session only 0.065 seconds behind Button. Seven-time Formula 1 champion Schumacher also did a good job in his MGP-W02 and finished fourth in the session only 0.607 seconds behind Button after having three spins
on turn 11 of the track.
The German was also impressed by his performance and said that, “We had quite a positive Friday, and it was especially good that we were able to test both wet and dry tyres. I hadn't really driven the wets so I'm pleased that I finally had some opportunity
to use them.”
Mercedes have brought a lot of upgrades for the Turkish Grand Prix and trying them out on both wet and dry Pirelli compound was a good step forward for the team.
Nevertheless, there is still a lot of work to be done for Mercedes to bag a podium out of the Turkish GP. Both German drivers of the Mercedes team have done their fastest lap without the defending world champion Sebastian Vettel, so that might be a difference
when Vettel returns for the race on Sunday.
