Nico Rosberg awarded with Lorenzo Bandini trophy, becomes 18th recipient – Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg recently received Lorenzo Bandini trophy from Italy on his great performance in the 2010 Formula 1 season with the team.
Nico now becomes the 18th driver, besides other Formula 1 great drivers, to receive this trophy which is handed over annually by the village of Brisighella in a memory of a local driver, Bandini who was killed in the Monaco Grand Prix in 1967.
After receiving the trophy Nico joked, “The trophy itself is fantastic, like a piece of art. It’s very, very heavy - I nearly had to interrupt the photo calls because I couldn’t hold it anymore!”
The German also said, “It’s a great honour to be awarded the Bandini Trophy. It’s not just awarded for achievements on the race track, but also a driver’s mentality and approach to the sport, which gives it extra meaning.”
The German driver joined the newly formed Mercedes team in the 2010 Formula 1 season and was able to show that the car has some potential. Despite his seven-time Formula 1 world champion teammate Michael Schumacher failing to control the car, Nico grabbed
three podium positions in the 2010 season.
Nico ended the 2010 season in seventh place and scored double points than his teammate.
After receiving the trophy, Nico also took a 12-kilometre ride in the AMG Mercedes C-Class DTM car from Faenza to Brisighella.
Nico will head back to Canada where he will participate in the seventh grand prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season. In this season so far, the German is again leading the point’s battle from Schumacher.
Nico has managed to grab 26 points in the opening six races of the season, despite failing to end the race in the opening race in Australia due to a mechanical failure in his car.
Formula 1 now moves to the western side of the world where the Canadian Grand Prix will be contested on June 12, 2011.
