Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes can reduce gap to frontrunners with new exhaust – Formula 1 news
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg feels confident that they can close the gap to the teams in the front with their new exhaust system in W03 in the remainder of the 2012 Formula 1 season.
The Silver Arrows tested their new exhaust layout in the Young Driver Test held at Magny-Cours in France and seemed quite happy with the update after analysing the data.
Later on, they launched their novel exhaust design in the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix at Marina Bay Street Circuit. Even though, Rosberg struggled during the free practice and the qualifying, nevertheless, he performed quite convincingly in the race and managed
to secure 5th place finish after taking a start from 10th grid slot.
The veteran German driver said that he is very pleased with his result in the preceding race and praised the efforts of his team for making the essential developments in the car.
“It was an exciting weekend for us as a team because we had quite a lot of new parts on the car,” Rosberg said. “It's a very complicated development we are doing there on the aerodynamics, with the exhaust gases pointed in a certain direction so you get
hot air in the back of car to create downforce so you can go faster through corners.”
In addition, he said that although he has achieved promising result in the last race, however, he asserted that they have not been able to take full advantage of their new exhaust design. Therefore, he said that they are looking forward to get the most out
of their new upgrade package and are hoping to score more points in the forthcoming races.
“So I'm quite optimistic that we can extract a lot of potential out of that and others are a bit advanced on that already so maybe we can catch up a bit, which would be good,” he added.
At present, the Brackley based team is standing at 5th place in the constructors’ championship. Additionally, they are ahead of Sauber and are behind their main rival, Lotus. Let’s see how they show up in the Japanese GP.
