Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes is in the running for the 2012 Championship title – Formula 1 news
Nico Rosberg believes that the 2012 season is proving to provide the team with a great opportunity to win the world championship.
Mercedes at the start of the season had hoped that it could be able to win races and that was the initial target but since the season has started it seems that Mercedes has had a good run in the season and with saw Nico Rosberg record a Grand Prix win in
the third race of the season.
It was Rosberg’s maiden victory, and then he has been able to give consistent performances like he showed at the Monaco Grand Prix where he drove impressively to finish second behind only Mark Webber. It was a very good result for Mercedes as it showed that
the team had the car and the drivers to give podium finishes.
Although the team has not been able to provide Michael Schumacher with the required equipment to start his season the way it should be Mercedes is still not doing too bad with Rosberg brining in the points for the team.
Rosberg is placed fifth in the drivers’ standings with 67 points only 21 points behind the leader Lewis Hamilton. If Schumacher starts to get the equipment right the team could very well me on its way to making a strong contention of the top three slots
at least.
Rosberg however believes that the team has an opportunity at the Championship.
He said, “I just know that it is fantastic for the fans - and a big chance for us. We have to understand the tyres better, although we do understand quite a lot by now. It is an interesting topic - one that I would say is key to this year's championship.
But if you take those seven different winners then all the others are also trying to get acquainted with the tyres not just us. It is a very difficult language to learn!”
The season has been so competitive so far that there have been seven Grands Prix and seven different winners the season has yet to see a repeat winner. Rosberg could very well be the first one to do that but the unpredictability of the season is such that
no speculations can be made.
Valencia will be a good challenge for Mercedes and a good opportunity to show their mettle.
