Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes will overcome tyre issues and remain in contention – Formula 1 news
Nico Rosberg says that Mercedes is still very much in contention for the Championship.
Mercedes has suffered another disappointing result at the Spanish Grand Prix. Both their drivers found it hard to manage the Pirelli compounds. Michael Schumacher’s run ended when he crashed into Williams’ driver Bruno Senna during the Spanish GP at Barcelona.
The crash interestingly enough has been explained to be a result of misjudgement and the different conditions of the rubber compounds of the two cars. Schumacher was in lap 12 and was looking to overtake Senna who according to the German applied the brakes
too early and caused the crash. The stewards have found Schumacher to be at mistake and have slapped a five-place grid penalty for the Monaco Grand Prix.
Schumacher has already said that the Pirelli tyres have caused him trouble and are ruining his races but despite these troubles Rosberg feels that Mercedes can still manage to remain in contention for the Constructors’ Championship title.
He is able to say that after five races have gone by in the season ironically because of the Pirelli compounds due to which the races have been so closely matched and strategically fought that no one driver or team seems to be a clear favourite. The season
so far has seen five different drivers from five different teams victorious.
“I only lost two points on the championship lead, which was good, and I am still only 20 points away which is good, as long as we can push on and improve,” explained Rosberg on his own video blog.
“Hopefully the conditions in Monaco and Montreal will favour us again. It is possible. But it is difficult to understand how the next race is going to be: let's wait and see. For us onwards and upwards as Ross [Brawn, team principal] would say.”
Rosberg admitted that failing to overcome the tyres is the main reason for the Spanish weekend to go as bad as it did for the Mercedes team.
It will be interesting to see what Mercedes plans to do to overcome this hurdle in the season and come up with better performances in the season.
