Nico Rosberg not sure how changed Pirelli tyres will behave in Germany – Formula 1 News
Nico Rosberg is not sure how the changed Pirelli tyres will work with Mercedes in the German GP.
Talking about the Friday practice sessions, he said, “It was a good day in general, but the soft tyres didn't last very long, that's for sure. Sunday will tell
us if we have been advantaged or disadvantaged. It's interesting because the tyres are different and we have to adapt - some set-up changes and things like that.”
Although the new tyres pose a threat to the German squad, Rosberg says that it could turn out to be a blessing for them. He said, “It's also an opportunity for
us, if we can understand them quicker than others, to take another step compared to everybody else. A few tenths here or there and you might see a different grid and different race results.”
Mercedes have been extremely quick over the past few races and it seems that their private test session with Pirelli has really helped. The team was strong in terms
of qualifying pace at the start of the season, but there was always some uncertainty for them during the race day.
However, that problem seems to be history now, as the Brackley based team has shown some tremendous race pace over the past three races. They have managed to match
rivals Ferrari, Red Bull and Lotus and have jumped up places in the Constructor’s Championship.
Looking at the recent performances of Mercedes, it seems that they will cause a lot of problems for their rivals in the remaining half of the season. Although their
drivers Lewis Hamilton and Rosberg are not much closer to the championship leaders, they are bridging the gap pretty quickly.
The latter of the two drivers has been luckier, winning both the races for his team this year. He was untouchable in Monaco, as he topped all of the practice sessions
before setting the pole lap and followed that up with a comfortable race victory.
However, he was lucky to win the previous round in Silverstone, where he did not have the pace to match team-mate Hamilton, who dropped down to fourth after bursting
the left rear tyre of his car.
