Nico Rosberg says he did not understand tyre degradation in Malaysia – Formula 1 news
Nico Rosberg admits that he could not understand why he had so much tyre degradation during the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Mercedes failed to show any substance in the second race of the weekend as well. The team was hailed to be one of the top teams in the 2012 season, and their pre-season performances and qualifiers were very encouraging. The team though has failed to materialise
that promise on race days.
Rosberg admitted that during the Australian Grand Prix the tyre degradation was a major concern, but in Malaysia the compounds had a different nature of issue which could not completely understand.
“There is a lot of work ahead of us as we are still struggling in the race, and it is going to take some thorough analysis. We have enough time before China [on April 15], so I hope we can improve,” Rosberg added.
“It is strange we are so strong in qualifying but then struggling in the race,” Rosberg said on his official video blog after the Malaysian GP. “In qualifying with the car we have we can fight for the front row, but in the race [we cannot match that].”
Michael Schumacher has also faced trouble during the races on both occasions. He finished 10 in Malaysia that too because Pastor Maldonado had a blown engine and was retired. He will want to change in that in the Chinese Grand Prix.
Qualifier pace of the car has been impressive the team does not seem to get the same result when it matters and that is a major concern. It is still early to discount them, but Mercedes will be looking to change a few things as soon as possible if they want
to keep up the race of the world title and the drivers’ championship. Two almost pointless races is a major blow for the team and they are going to need a much-improved performance in China to remain in contention.
It will be interesting to see how Mercedes manage to change their woes as the season progresses. The next race is going to be held in China about two weeks from now.
