Nico Rosberg says he is happy with the Pirelli compounds – Formula 1 news
Nico Rosberg says he is a fan of the 2012 Pirelli compounds.
Just after the Bahrain Grand Prix Rosberg’s team-mate Michael Schumacher blamed the Pirelli tyres for his poor showing. He said that the tyres degrade too quickly.
Pirelli has responded by saying that Schumacher did not have any trouble with the tyres during the pre-season tests and these are the same compounds.
Rosberg has come out in support of the tyres, like many followers and former drivers of the sport have. The popular notion is that the tyres have added another dimension to the sport.
“It's just a very different game,” Rosberg told Autosport. “We have seen already this year that when you go from one condition to another, one racetrack to another, one temperature to another... different cars are better on the tyres, so there's a very big
engineering challenge to understand why, to adapt and to try and be the one to understand the tyres best. That can be a very big key for the season, so we're pushing hard to try and understand that quicker than others.”
“Personally, I think it's great for the season. We've had four winners in four races, all mixed up. It couldn't be better for Formula One. Also within the races, with the tyre degradation and with lots of overtaking, we've had lots of exciting races,” he
added.
Paul Hembery said that it will be a matter of time until the teams come up with strategies that will enable them to utilize the tyres in the best possible way. He said that it will make the sport more predictable.
He added that it was the same scenario last year and it will take not more than three or four races for the engineers to come up with a way to maximise the performance and find the right balance of the car. The Pirelli tyres are made to create these challenges,
if a tyre is required with zero degradation that can be done but then overtaking will diminish and so will the viewership and that is not good for the sport.
