Nico Rosberg says winning races is not a distant reality for Mercedes in 2012 – Formula 1 news
Nico Rosberg has expressed his desire to win races in the upcoming season and suggests it is not out of the question to materialise that goal.
Mercedes launched their new car the W03 during the second pre-season test at Barcelona, and have so far shown good reliability and pace as they accumulated great mileage with the car. Nico Rosberg looked confident after he had a good run in the car and suggested
that he is looking to win races now.
Rosberg said that winning races could have come earlier for him as he tried hard in a car that was not completely up to the mark. He further added that now that the car has shown better pace and reliability winning races is a strong reality.
The young German has maintained a better showing than his older and more illustrious teammate Michael Schumacher. Rosberg for the past two seasons beat Schumacher in points and has admitted that beating the veteran gave him great satisfaction and he intends
to keep on doing that, but that the focus is now also shifting towards the bigger prize which is winning races.
“With a bit of luck, the win could have come in the last couple of years,” Rosberg told F1 Racing magazine. “So if the new car is a bit better, the chances of winning are quite big. It felt completely natural to lead races.”
“If I get the right car, which I can help build up myself, then I will win. Of course beating Michael gives me satisfaction. I was pleased to stay ahead of him last year, but the important thing is to win some races now. Last year wasn't a good season because
it was a step back from my first season with Mercedes. Now it's important to turn the corner and improve,” Rosberg expressed his plans of the upcoming season.
The third pre-season test begins a week from now at the same track where Mercedes will look to enhance on their cars performance for the upcoming season. The season begins on March 18, 2012 with the Australian Grand Prix as the inaugurating race.
