Nico Rosberg thinks Mercedes need to improve their tyre management – Formula 1 news
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has said that they need to improve their tyre management in order to attain competitive results in season ahead after struggling with his pace in the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix.
Rosberg performed convincingly well in the qualifying at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal and managed to secure 4th grid slot for the race. However, he failed to match the pace of his rivals, Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and Fernando Alonso of Ferrari
and could only secure 5th place finish.
The German driver insisted that he didn’t have the pace to secure a higher position in the preceding race. Nonetheless, he said that he is feeling contended over his result as he efficiently limited the damage for his team by scoring some good points.
“Today was not great; I just didn't have the speed really to do better than fifth place,” Rosberg said. “So from that point of view it's damage limitation and fifth place is OK, good points.”
In addition, he admired the performance of his teammate, Lewis Hamilton who secured an amazing third podium finish after taking a start from second grid slot. He asserted that Hamilton’s performance was the benchmark for the Silver Arrows. However, he emphasised
that they earnestly need to resolve their reliability issues in order to perform well in the approaching races.
“I think our reference point today as a team is where Lewis was which was third and that shows that we still definitely need to make further progress just in terms of how we manage the tyres and everything because on one lap I think we had the fastest car
but still struggling a little bit in the race not being able to do better than third place,” he added.
Presently, he is standing at 6th place in the drivers’ championship with 57 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Felipe Massa of Ferrari and behind his main competitor, Webber. He has impressed everyone with his inspiring qualifying performance in the season
so far and has scored one race victory. Let’s see how he performs in the upcoming races.
