Nico Rosberg upbeat about the Mercedes upgrades and believes KERS and DRS will come in handy
Nico Rosberg of Mercedes has recently expressed his feelings about the upgraded MGP-W02 and said that the car is in better shape than last year and Mercedes can be at the top of the tables this season. He further added that strategies along with the Pirelli
tyres will play a crucial role in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Nico Rosberg seemed very happy about the upgrades brought into the new car because in the last pre-season test in Barcelona, he and his teammate Michael Schumacher were uncatchable. MGP-W02 showed good reliability and good speed as Nico was the fastest on
the final day and Schumacher was the fastest of both tests held in Barcelona.
Nico said, “We've made good progress over the four tests. It's perhaps been a more difficult winter than we expected....... we have the car that we want for the start of the season.” He added that the car is still slow but the reliability will get the team
where they want to be.
Talking about the regulations and the new Pirelli tyres, Nico said that the new rules of DRS drag reduction system and KERS kinetic Energy Recovery System will come in handy this season, especially when Red Bull and Ferrari are the target. He explained that
he and his teammate have a good understanding about the Pirelli tyres but the KERS and DRS will take two or three Grand Prixs to get used to. Talking about the DRS or movable wing he said that the use of it is restricted but the system is straight forward
to operate.
Rosberg said that he thinks pit-stops will be a championship decider over the course of the season. Although Fernando Alonso of Ferrari said that fastest car will win because of the factor that speed is the only variable this season. He added that KERS,
DRS and Pirelli are constants and the same for everyone.
The season starts in less than two weeks and it will be interesting to see whether the regulation changes have some affect on the season or the spectators will witness another Red Bull and Ferrari season.
