Nicol, Monteiro, Cardoso and Mendes through to quarter-finals - Saquarema Surf Pro International
Four surfers, Yadin Nicol, Raoni Monteiro, Willian Cardoso and Jesse Mendes have sneaked through to the quarter-finals of the Saquarema Surf Pro International at Itauna, Saquarema, in Brazil, on May 28.
Australian surfer, Yadins Nicol, captured a stunning victory over USA’s Cory Lopez in heat one of the Men’s round of 12 with a very little margin of 12.70 to 12.16 points, while Lincoln Taylor did not make a big impact in the following heat and ended on
11.24.
Nicol was very fast, furious and thrilling at his last wave against Cory Lopez and he secured the highest heat score of 7.60 out of 10.
The Australian was thrilled with his performance and said, “That was fantastic. I got stuck inside for the longest time and I just kept thinking about getting outside to surf those waves. It’s tough to paddle into the waves, but I gave it all I had on that
last wave and I'm happy I got the score.”
Brazilian surfer, Raoni Monteiro, ousted local Junior Faria, in heat two with an intriguing score of 11.17 to 11.00. Gabriel Medina of Brazil ended third with a total score of 9.10 in the following heat.
In heat three, Willian Cardoso of Brazil secured the highest score of 13.33 out of 20, while Adam Robertson of Australia was placed second with a total score of 8.67 and Kai Otton of Australia settled third with a score of 5.10 in the respective heat.
Storming weather conditions became the root cause of the shocking performance of Australian surfer, Kai Otton, who clinched only 5.10 points in the heat.
Heat four of the Men’s round of 12 was captured by Jesse Mendes, against Damien Hobgood of USA in a tight battle, where the Brazilian surfer won with a fringe margin of 11.70 to 11.00 points, while Adam Melling of Australia settled third with a poor score
of 1.83.
Adam Melling said, “It’s not easy to find waves out there, but I like to surf when it’s like this. It’s almost like Margaret River, where I won a Prime earlier this year.  I hope it’s like this tomorrow.”
Damien Hobgood will vie against Kai Otton in heat four, while Adam Melling will compete against Adam Robertson in heat three and Lincoln Taylor will face Junior Faria in heat two of the Men’s round of 12 for the quarter-final places. Cory Lopez will also
compete against Gabriel Medina in heat one of round 12.
