Nicolas Almagro and Fernando Verdasco; All-set for Heineken Open 2012 – Tennis Special
All set for the Spaniards to rule, Auckland will be watching world No.10, Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro, playing in next year’s Heineken Open. Aged 26, Almagro joins the defending champion and the current world No.5, David Ferrer and
compatriot, Fernando Verdasco, former world No.7 as the trio take the top seed spots for the event.
Making his sixth appearance at the Heineken Open, Almagro will take on the courts in the Panasonic Single from 9th to 14th of January, next year. Making a startling start to the 2011 season with back-to-back
ATP titles in Costa do Sauipe and Buenos Aires, the Spaniard reaches his third successive final a week after, in Acapulco where his 13 match unbeaten run came to a halt as he lost the final to compatriot, Ferrer.
However, his third title was not far away as he stormed in and bagged the title at Nice and followed with another spectacular run at Hamburg, reaching the finals of the tournament. The tournament director, Richard Palmer, said
that the Spaniard, hinted at a stronger performance for the 2011 season with his semi-final run in Auckland.
“Nicolas has unlimited potential but I’m not sure we’ve always seen the best of him here in Auckland. After the outstanding year he’s had he’ll certainly be keeping the other Spaniards honest in next year’s Heineken Open.”
The Spaniard also has 10 singles title in his pocket, and surprisingly all on his favourite surface, clay. Almagro’s best performances at Grand Slams are two quarter-final runs at the French Open in 2008 and in 2010. Not to mention
that the Spaniard has a career earnings of $US 5.6 as per now.
With the complete structure of the 2012 Heineken Open being announced of 30 November, tickets for the tournament and the Heineken Baseline After Party are now on sale through Ticketek. A band for Newzeland, the Phoenix foundation,
alongside musician Barnaby Weir would be performing on the Heineken Baseline After Party launch on Saturday, 14th of January. Cost of the ticket is roughly $30 that comprises the viewing of the Heineken Open Final on a massive screen on the back
courts ahead of the party kickoff.
Sky Sports will be screening all the centre circuit fixtures of Heineken Open 2012 as the action runs uninterrupted from the start of the play at 1pm each day until the day’s last game. The event is surely to be a spectacular one
as Ferrer, world No.5, defends his title against his compatriots.
