Nicolas Almagro cripples Leonardo Mayer to reach fourth round – French Open 2012
Seeded 12th in this tournament, Nicolas Almagro took down the Argentinean contender, Leonardo Mayer, with a breadstick at the Roland Garros 2012 on Saturday. He registered a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory against the world number 62 to book a spot in the
round of 16 at this clay court Grand Slam event held in France.
Almagro remained on course to crack the top-10 once again after tumbling over the Argentine in straight sets. The contestants last met each other at the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires and after earning this success, the Spaniard extended his lead in the FedEx
ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 2-0 against Mayer.
The Spanish number three assertively entered the Court number Seven and held his opening serve to take the initial lead. He then continued hammering forehands to pluck his remaining serves without facing any difficulty. Almagro got the breakthrough in the
last game and clicked the opener with a 6-4 win.
Ranked 13th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Almagro improved his game in the proceeding set and after earning the critical break in the second game, he jumped to a 3-0 lead. After Mayer held his serve in the fourth game,
the Spaniard swiped the last three games and pulled out the set with a breadstick.
Almagro kept momentum rolling into the third set and secured the victory in 35 minutes. After Mayer held his serve in the third game, the in-form Spaniard unleashed his skills and went on a five-game rampage. He kept his entire serves without facing any
trouble and cashed in half of the four break chances to register 6-2 success.
Next up for Almagro is the eighth seed, Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia. The Serbian number two stomped over the local seed, Julien Benneteau, in straight sets to set up this epic battle.
Almagro’s compatriot, Rafael Nadal, will accompany him in the round of 16. He also slew an Argentine to secure this spot. The world number two formulated a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 victory against the Argentinean qualifier, Eduardo Schwank, to advance at this prestigious
event.
