Nicolas Almagro fired up to perform in the Davis Cup for Spain – Tennis News
World number eleven, Nicolas Almagro, is all set to return to the Davis Cup duty with a brand new squad of Spain that will face-off Team Kazakhstan from 10th to 12th of February. Talking about his Davis Cup duty, he stated, “I'm happy how I am doing and happy season for tennis I'm doing. Perhaps I have missed some luck at peak times, but I will keep working to improve.”
Unfortunately, his performance in the Australian Open was not impressive. He lost his Top-10 ranking to the Argentine, Juan Martin Del Potro, which is a big loss to any player at any level of the sport. He stated, “I know I have to keep on this road to reach the results, which are then reflected in the ranking.” There is an intense completion in the field of tennis these days and no one is spared of any lazy performances. It will be difficult for him to break into the Top-10 players once again considering the fact that all players in there are very hard working.
He commenced the new season at the Aircel Chennai Open and made it to the semi-finals of the tournament before he was overshadowed by a blistering performance from the fourth seed Canadian, Milos Raonic. Auckland tour was another disappointment for him. He was the second seed contestant in Heineken Open as well but lost to the eighth seed German during the quarter-finals.
The Australian open was impressive but he failed to register any upsets that are crucial to progress to the advanced stages of the tournament. He ousted three inferior ranked players in the first three rounds of the tournament but lost a controversial match against the seventh seed Czech, Tomas Berdych. The Czech contestant was hit from the return shot by Almagro and he had to put up his hands to save the ball hitting his face. Although Almagro apologized to him right away, Berdych refused to shake hands at the end of the match showing discomfort at the act of the Spaniard.
There is a lot of happening in the life of Almagro and with a new Davis Cup duty, he will need to buff up and perform for his country in order to earn back some respect. Almagro further added, “For me it is an important decision because you have to think on your calendar also individual. Captain (Alex Corretja) has decided to tell me and I give the best on the team.” It will be interesting to see the performance that is put forth by the newly formed Spanish team in the Davis Cup.
