Nicolas Almagro inches away to break back into the Top-10 rankings – Tennis News
Spanish number three, Nicolas Almagro, has been one of the brightest uprising tennis performers of the 2011 ATP season but couldn’t sustain his intensity in the current year. He was ranked at number nine in the South African Airways
ATP World Tour Rankings in May last year but some inconsistent game play from the Spaniard pushed him down to the 14th rank in one year’s time. However, some thrilling cameos from Almagro in the recent tournaments have taken him once again close
to entering the elite Top-10 rankings.
Holding the 11th spot in the men’s world rankings, Almagro has accumulated 2,515 ranking points. His points are currently levelled with Franc’s Richard Gasquet, whose better average has put him on the 10th
spot. The 11th ranked Spaniard has every chance to surpass Gasquest and break back into the Top-10 rankings. A decent performance in any of the season-opening tournament will enable Almagro to edge past the Frenchman comprehensively.
27-year-old Almagro has been on the ATP World Tour for quite some time now but hasn’t gone past the world number nine rank in his career. His phenomenal performances in the 2011 professional circuit included 47-23 winning record
and three ATP World Tour championship titles. Albeit of a massive increase in his match winning ratio this year, Almagro hasn’t been able to bag more titles. He played a total of 83 matches, winning 59 out of them and taking home two championship trophies.
The Spaniard number three won his maiden title of the 2012 ATP World Tour in Sao Paulo in February, outplaying Filippo Volandri of Italy in the three-set final of the event. His triumph was immediately followed a final round defeat
at the hands of his fellow compatriot, David Ferrer, in Buenos Aires.
Known as a very competitive clay-court player, Almagro made it to the quarter-final round of the Roland Garros French Open for the third time but got defeated by the eventual champion and the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal. His voyages
lasted until the third round at Wimbledon Championships and the fourth round at the US Open Championships. Almagro couldn’t display his best performance in the final of the coveted Davis Cup against Czech Republic. He lost both of his singles rubbers and Spain
failed to defend its title at the elite team event.
No doubt Almagro is a very sound and talented player and has a very good chance to be enlisted among the world’s top 10 tennis performers in the coming season. It won’t take him more than two weeks to surpass Gasquet and earn his
lost glory once again.
