Spanish number three, Nicolas Almagro, hailed his team after their impressive performance at the Davis Cup World Group Final 2012 last weekend. The Spanish team took the battle to the deciding fifth rubber and regardless of losing, they exited in high spirits.
The Defending champions, Spaniards were bidding for their fourth title in five years at this prestigious events held between nations from around the world.
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, conquered the opening rubber against Radek Stepanek and put his nation ahead. However, the Czech rebounded afterwards and Tomas Berdych carved out the victory against Almagro in the second rubber, eventually levelling the
scores at 1-1.
The in-form Spanish tandem, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, made a thunderous entry at the O2 Arena in Prague the following day. However, they swayed from their path and eventually suffered a 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, 3-6 loss against Berdych and Stepanek.
The world number five, Ferrer, unleashed his skills again in the opening reverse singles against the Czech number one. He trashed Berdych with a 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 score line and raised Spain’s hopes high once again.
In the fifth rubber when the battle was poise at a knife edge, Almagro showed dismal performance and ultimately suffered a 4-6, 6-7(0), 6-3, 3-6 loss against the world number 31.
"These are very tough moments, but we can't be down on ourselves in any way as we fought to the last moment," Almagro stated in an interview to
TVE. "We are runners-up in the Davis Cup. It's not what we wanted as we came here to win the title but we are leaving with our heads held high knowing that we did a good job."
Despite failing to pull out the victory in the decisive fifth rubber, Almagro was delighted with his and his teams’ performance in Prague.
"It was a fantastic experience," Almagro was quoted in a courtside interview after edging out by the Czech. "It's a pleasure for me to be part of the team."
This was Czech Republic’s first Davis Cup title since 1980. Spicing their season further, the Czechs also conquered the Fed Cup.
