Nicolas Almagro says Spanish team should not get disappointed – Tennis News
World number 11, Spain’s Nicolas Almagro, has said that members of the Spanish Davis Cup side should keep their heads high, as they fought bravely and gave their best.
Spain lost 2-3 at the hands of Czech Republic in the Davis Cup final in Prague last weekend. The Spaniards, who are all clay specialists, were facing the hosts on the fastest surface in tennis at the indoor hard courts. They had
a huge disadvantage, as they had the conditions and crowd against them but they still took the tie to the final match.
It was all depending on Almagro in the end, as he faced Czech Republic’s second best player, Radek Stepanek, in the fifth match. The Spaniard was the favourite before the start of the match due to his better ranking but he lost
to the Czech veteran in four sets. Earlier, he had lost to Tomas Berdych in a five set thriller on the opening day of the tie.
Talking to media at the end of the tie, Almagro said, "These are very tough moments, but we can't be down on ourselves in any way as we fought to the last moment. We are runners-up in the Davis Cup. It's not what we wanted as we
came here to win the title but we are leaving with our heads held high knowing that we did a good job."
Almagro had a good season, capturing a couple of titles but the point is that both of them were won on outdoor clay courts and these playing conditions were totally different. He added, "It was a fantastic experience. It's a pleasure
for me to be part of the team."
Ferrer was the saddest of all players after the loss. He had won both of his singles match during this tie. The world number five thrashed Stepanek on the opening day and Tomas Berdych on the last.
He stated, "We're sad at this moment. I'm very proud of our team. We were fighting to win here in Prague."
Spain was bidding to win its fourth Davis Cup title in the last five seasons and sixth since 2000.
