Nicolas Anelka would welcome Wayne Rooney at Chelsea
With Wayne Rooney on the verge of leaving Manchester United, Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has said that he would welcome the addition of the England international to the squad at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, attacker Salomon Kalou has expressed his wish that Rooney stay in the English Premier League.
It was revealed on Tuesday, 19 October, by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, that Rooney had officially spoken of his desire to move on from the club which he joined in 2004. He had refused to sign an extension to his contract, which was due to
run out in 2012.
The news means that he could move on from Old Trafford as soon as January, with several of Europe’s biggest clubs being touted as potential destinations for the 24-year-old, including EPL big-spenders Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Jose
Mourinho’s Real Madrid and La Liga champions, Barcelona.
Chelsea has also emerged as a possible option for the player and while manager Carlo Ancelotti has distanced himself from any talk surrounding the Rooney situation, Anelka, who netted his 50th goal for the club against Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Champions
League on Tuesday, told Sky Sports News that he would like to see the forward with the Blues.
"Rooney is a good player, everybody knows his quality. If he wants to come to Chelsea, then he is welcome, but I am not the owner."
Kalou, who made his return from injury in the match against Spartak, added that he hoped Rooney would stay in England and reject the chance to play for a Spanish, Italian or German club.
"Wayne is a great player. He has proved that with Manchester United and England. It would be good to have Wayne in the Premier League."
