Nicolas Colsaerts beats Justin Rose at the Accenture Match Play Championship
Nicolas Colsaerts defeated Justin Rose in the second stage of the World Golf Championship – Accenture Match Play Championships, to join the last 16 players, on Friday, February 22, 2013.
The first World Golf Championship of the season is being staged at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain, featuring some of the best European Tour and PGA Tour players from different parts of the world.
Colsaerts, who is known as the European Tour’s biggest hitter, defeated his English counterpart 4 and 2, almost a year after he defeated his Ryder Cup teammate 4 and 3 in the 2012 edition of the Volvo Match Play Championship, held in Spain.
So far, the tournament has seen big upsets, as seven of the eight top seeds have left the event, after facing fierce defeats in the opening two rounds.
Colsaerts, in the meantime, held on to his nerves and played brilliantly, to outshine his opponent in the field.
Right from the beginning of the match, Colsaerts held control over the game and did not allow Rose to put any pressure on him.
The front nine of the course witnessed Rose securing only two points, against Colsaerts’ four points. Rose gained another point on the 11th hole and reduced his deficit to just one point.
However, Colsaerts made a strong comeback and earned three points over the next five holes, to finish the match with two holes left.
Talking to the reporters after winning the match, the Belgian star expressed his pleasure in marking a strong start to his campaign at Dove Mountain.
He now plans to remain consistent in the rounds to come, to take home the prestigious trophy, for the first time in his career.
“I didn't feel particularly bad about playing Justin, but I knew that when you play somebody of the stature of Justin, it can always go very fast one way or the other,” said Colsaerts. “Having beaten Justin last year, I felt pretty confident going out knowing
if I played my game I would have a fair chance to do the job; but then anything can happen”.
“I thought I played really good. Could have been maybe a bit more intuitive on certain occasions I had to put the foot down, but I played pretty good the last couple of holes,” he added.
