Nicolas Colsaerts finishes tied for the fifth position at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi
Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts recorded a strong finish at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi, in a bid to prepare for the Ryder Cup, slated to start from September 28, 2012.
Colsaerts was brimming with confidence when he kicked off at the Royal Park I Roveri last Thursday. He was playing with some of his playing partners from the European Ryder Cup team.
He got off an average start, as he posted a 71 in the opening round. However, he picked up some pace on day two and recorded six birdies against a lone bogey for a round of 67.
On Saturday, he further improved his performance stats and recorded an impressive seven-under par 65 to get into contention for the top spot.
Even though, he failed to make it to the top of the leaderboard, he cheered his fans with a decent display of the game on Sunday.
He got off to a perfect start and birdied three of the first four holes that he played. He then received a huge round of applause from the spectators, when he eagled the par-five eighth hole and briefly took the outright lead.
However, he failed to maintain consistency on the back nine of the course, as he conceded two bogeys against the same number of birdies.
He finished with a five-under par 67 for an 18-under par tournament score, and shared the fifth spot on the leaderboard.
“I feel pretty good,” said Colsaerts. “I had a fantastic start which was just what I wanted - to go deep under par after only a few holes. Two bad swings broke my momentum, and on a course like this where everyone makes birdies everywhere, momentum is very
important and it feels like you're losing ground. But I finished well again, which was what I wanted”.
“I wish I could've done a little better here, but it's fulfilled the goal of continuing to play well before going to Medinah. I have a lot of good vibes,” he added.
Martin Kaymer, Pablo Larrazabal and Gary Boyd were the other three players who joined him on the leaderboard, at the end of the tournament.
