Nicolas Colsaerts gets exemption to play the Volvo World Match Play Championship – Golf News
Nicolas Colsaerts has been added to the field of the World Golf Championships - Volvo World Match Play Championship after securing the second spot in the Volvo China Open held last week.
According to the tournament policy, the exemption was planned to be allotted to the winner of the tournament.
Branden Grace came out of the field as a winner, who already had the exemption to play the third WGC of the year. Therefore, the officials decided to give it to Colsaerts, who was next in line.
Colsaerts has made a total of nine starts this year on the European Tour and has an impressive record to qualify for the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
He has not been able to register his first win of the season yet. However, he has recorded five top-10 finishes.
In the Volvo Golf Champions, he took the sole fourth place and stood ninth in both the Commercialbank Qatar Masters presented by Dolphin Energy and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
In addition to that, he took the third spot in the Sicilian Open prior to the second-place finish in the Volvo China Open.
Despite his outstanding performances this year on the European Tour, he has not been able to impress his fans in the first two WGC events of the year.
In the Accenture Match Play Championship, he stood at 33rd and the Cadillac Championship witnessed him take the 35th position, his worst for the 2012 season.
Therefore, he needs to make extra efforts in the WGCs, as he usually fails to compete when there are higher numbers of elite players participating in the event.
He has been consistent in breaking the par in each of the tournaments that he played. Yet, he needs to go further low in order to take a better spot on the leaderboard when he is facing PGA Tour players with better track records.
Meanwhile, when Colsaerts is added to the tournament in France, two top-ranked players, Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald, have announced not to participate in the event.
The complete line-up for the tournament is yet to be announced while Justin Rose, Paul Lawrie, Martin Kaymer, Peter Hanson, Retief Goosen and Alvaro Quiros, Darren Clarke and Ian Poulter have already confirmed their participation.
