Nicolas Colsaerts needs a good round on Sunday
Saturday had been a tough day for golfers at CordeValle. Many of the top golfers struggled to get going at Frys.com Open in the third round.
Even John Mallinger and Nick O’Hern could only manage a round of 70 and 71 respectively. Meanwhile, the Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts did not do himself good by carding an even par score on Saturday.
Colsaerts was in contention for the pole position after Friday. However, an average score in the third round means that a mammoth task lies ahead of him on Sunday.
The Belgian started the round perfectly, opening up with a birdie right on the first hole. He then birdied the fourth as well to go two-under for the day.
However, his good work was short lived when he faltered on the fifth and the sixth hole. His day worsened when he stuck a double bogey on the seventh and a bogey on the eight as well.
Colsaerts then restored some pride, shooting four birdies and a bogey on the last ten holes.
The Belgian bomber is currently playing on a special temporary membership but he is looking to earn a full time PGA tour card.
So far, Colsaerts has earned $652,886 and lies at the 120th spot in the money tour list. By the end of the season, he needs to earn the equivalent of the 125th in the money tour list.
A victory would have surely granted him the tour card for the 2013 season but now a win at the Frys.com Open looks unlikely, until and unless a miracle happens.
The world number 35 trails the leader, John Mallinger, by six shots. The European Ryder Cupper would need to break the course record.
However, not only that, but the others’ results must also go in his favour for him to land in his first PGA Title. More importantly, they may enable him to earn his tour card for the next season.
The Belgian likes to travel around and this time, he wants to explore the land of USA. That is mainly the reason why he is trying to earn a PGA tour card for 2013.
"This is all new for me, but every bit of taste that I get when I come over here and play is wonderful," Colsaerts said. "It would be stupid to think that I wouldn't like to play over here".
