Nicolas Colsaerts picks up his maiden victory at Volvo China Open – European Tour
European Tour sanctioned event of Volvo China Open finally concluded yesterday. The event has produced some fireworks during all the four days and turned out to be a thrilling one. On the final day, it
was Nicolas Colsaerts, who made it through to win the title.
The Belgian Colsaerts played beautifully during all the four rounds. He caressed his way on the leader board on the final day and carded a superb round of six-under par, 66. It was an amazing display of
golf by the 28-year-old, who won his maiden European Tour event. This victory came for him at the right time also.
Colsaerts final round 66 was under pressure as he won the championship by a margin of four strokes. The 28-year-old had a four-day aggregate score of 24-under par, 264. He was simply amazing on all the
four days and kept things going in his favour. This victory came after a long time as he was 18, when he qualified to play on European Tour.
Nicolas final day score card had six birdies. He was holding his putts on the pressure occasions as he did not wary of the players charging on the leader board. This was a great performance by him, as
he did not bogey a hole playing on the final day being the leader.
After making the final par putt on the par-5, 18th, he said, “I’m enjoying every second of it. I’m dizzy - my head is going all over the place. I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time
and I think I did it in the best of manners so I’m really delighted.”
Colsaerts now occupies the 10th spot on Race to Dubai Rankings. This victory gave him a lot of confidence. He now will be targeting another victory as this was a great break-through for him
in his career.
Four players shared the second spot after the final day. Pablo Martin of Spain, Danny Lee of New Zealand, Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark and Irishman Peter Lawrie, all were four behind the champion. They had
a same four day score of 20-under par, 268.
The Spaniard, Martin, carded the lowest round on the final day. He was simply fantastic with his hitting and carded a composed round of nine-under par, 63. Martin had a total of ten birdies on the final
day. He only had a single bogey for the final round. His bogey came on the par-4, 9th where his approach shot went over the green.
Martin was charging on the leader board, but his superb score was not enough to claim him a victory. His great final round score also helped him jump on the final score board.
Martin was also making some great putts on the green and took full advantage of his superb approach shots on a few holes. He was overwhelmed with his performance on all the four rounds and is confident
of carrying this form in the next tournaments also.
At the prize distribution ceremony, Colsaerts picked up the coveted trophy along with the winner’s cheque. He was awarded with a cheque of € 350,946.
