Nicolas Colsaerts relying on his long-hitting technique at the Thailand Golf Championship
Nicolas Colsaerts is confident to utilise his long-hitting skills at the Amata Spring Country Club, when he tees off this week at the Thailand Golf Championship.
With an average of 318.35 yards with his driver on the European Tour, he is listed among the longest hitters who are participating in the second-last event of the 2012 Asian Tour season.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he stated that the long hitters will have advantage over their competitors, as the Amata Spring Country Club is regarded as one of the longest golf courses in Asia.
“The ball doesn’t really roll a lot. ...If you drive it long and know where exactly you need to go, then you will have an advantage. We will see Bubba (Watson) taking a few shortcuts including myself so it will be interesting to see how we do,” he said.
According to the golf commentators, Colsaerts will be among the hot favourites to record a victory in Bangkok, considering the fact that the Belgian is currently enjoying a great run of form.
In his 25 European Tour starts this season, the 30-year-old has recorded 10 top-10 finishes, including a victory at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
“I won a matchplay which was a big week for me,” he said. “It was a year of confirmation that I can play at this level. I’ve been playing new tournaments and being a professional for 12 years, it is pretty exciting to play in a new tournament. It is a refreshing
year for me”.
He also came close to successfully defending his title at the Volvo China Open. However, Branden Grace outshined him after carding a 21-under par tournament score. Colsaerts finished with an 18-under par 270 to take the second place on the leaderboard.
In addition to that, he also became the first Belgian player in the history of the game to make it into the European Ryder Cup team.
Relying on his overall performance in the 2012 European Tour season, the nine-time professional winner has set his sights on winning his maiden Asian Tour title this week.
