Nicolas Colsaerts suffers elbow injury ahead of the Open Championship citing a possible withdrawal
Belgian star golfer, Nicolas Colsaerts is now likely to miss the Open Championship after the player severely bruised his elbow in a fall from a scooter. The 28-year-old, who was weighing his options to contest in the third major of the season, was visibly
disappointed with his misadventure in the Sandwich suburbs on Tuesday and reported that his elbow is still recuperating from the fall.
“I rented a scooter last night and went into Sandwich but I went over the pavement and fell on my elbow,” a glum-looking Colsaerts said. “The elbow doesn't feel the best right now but we are working on the swelling with the physio. The only hope is I have
a late start time on Thursday (1454 local) and that will give me a little more time to recover. I'm obviously a little low now but hopefully I'll be ready,”
Colsaerts was present at the practice rounds sessions at the Royal St. George’s on Wednesday and watched the rest of the field sort out their match strategy’s for tomorrow. Former U.S. Ryder Cup player Scott Verplank is the next reserve on the waiting list
and must be delighted to make an entry into the major championship.
Colsaerts who turned professional in 2000, has participated in just two majors till now, the Open Championship in 2004 and the US Open in 2011 but failed to make the cut on both occasions. He had a stellar season so far winning his first European Tour title,
the Volvo China Open and also made it into the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain, but gave in to the raging Ian Poulter, who snatched the title from Luke Donald in the final round.
Colsaerts’ back-to-back strong performances helped him break into the Open field here at Royal St. George’s only to see him fall for a dreadful injury. He insisted that no alcohol was involved in the incident and that it was purely circumstantial.
“There was no alcohol involved or anything -- don't worry about that,” he added.
Colsaerts will have to be sure to get into the competition as a late withdrawal will leave the space vacant and would deprive Verplank a chance to be part of the field.
