Nicolas Colsaerts wins the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Nicolas Colsaerts grabbed a title at the Volvo World Match Play Championship, recording his first victory in the current European Tour season.
The 29-year-old Belgian performed tremendously at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
He faced fierce winds and grabbed the $900,000 winning prize by defeating the famous Graeme McDowell by a one-point lead on Sunday.
More interestingly, Colsaerts is striving to make it to the Ryder Cups’ European Team, and now with the latest victory, he has improved his chances to find a spot in the 12-man team.
"I can't feel anything at the moment," Colsaerts said. "To have my name next to so many major winners is a dream come true. It's always been a dream of mine to play in a Ryder Cup. I know I am well placed, but there's still a long way to go".
He was happy to see his name on the top of the leaderboard, while also exited for the 2012 edition of the Ryder Cup, to be staged in the month of September.
Colsaerts amazed the spectators and his fans in the four-day tournament. He started on Thursday, played against Charl Schwartzel and the round ended in a draw.
Then in the second round on Friday, he faced a defeat at the hands of Retief Goosen and it was expected that Colsaerts would face elimination.
However, his scoring average and performance in both the initial rounds was impressive. He was given a green signal and he aimed high for the third round.
He faced Justin Rose on Saturday and displayed an amazing performance against him, winning by a one-point lead and securing his game-play of the final round.
In the afternoon session, he played against Brandt Snedeker and again recorded an impressive win by one point. He has avoided the elimination amazingly and earned many opportunities to win on Sunday.
In the final round of the European Tour event, Colsaerts faced Paul Lawrie in the quarter-final round and recorded a win.
He was in his full form and playing well. He defeated McDowell in the finals and became the proud winner of the tournament.
"The elements played a huge part," McDowell said. "I'm disappointed that they probably came out the winner today rather than the two players”.
