Nicole Mee wins 200m butterfly - 2011 Australian Age Championships
The 18-year-old Nicole Mee won the gold medal in the 200m butterfly on the last day of the 2011 Australian Age Championships in Adelaide. Mee, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals, earned the crowd’s applaud after sustaining her spot in the finals.
Cranbrook’s Nicole Mee had a fabulous win in the 200m event, clocking a time of 2:13.70 minutes ahead of the Hunter’s Leah Bird and Peters Western’s Melanie Bath, who reported second and third in 2:14.85 and 2:16.39 minutes respectively.
Mee had a speedy start that provided her lead in the initial metres of the race. Her lead was taken over by Bird, who overwhelmed her in the first half of the initial lap and clocked a time of 29.76 seconds to appear as the top contender for the gold medal while Mee completed her lap in 29.87 seconds. They both continued the battle in the next lap, where Bird clocked a time of 33.69 seconds in the first lap to post 1:03.45 minutes on the wall against Mee’s 33.66 seconds that posted 1:03.53 minutes. After a slightly faster second lap, Mee skimmed her lead to 0.08 seconds from 0.11 seconds.
Peters Western’s Melanie Bath followed them with a 30.47 seconds effort in the first lap and 34.16 seconds effort in the second lap that published 1:04.63 minutes. Furthermore, the top two swimmers remain involved in a neck-to-neck battle, but the tables turned when Mee overtook Bird in the third lap of the race. Mee touched the wall in 34.63 seconds to attain a lead of 0.60 seconds from Bird, who completed her third lap in 35.31 seconds. Mee’s tremendous effort of 1:38.16 minutes placed her in the top seat while Bird’s sluggish third lap accounted her for the second place.
In the meantime, Mee displayed a finest last turn and accelerated her swim to earn the gold medal while Bird’s slower final lap placed her second on the podium.
The ferocious swims of national youth in the 200m event cheered the crowd and they are expected to provide more entertainment at international age group swimming competitions.
