  1. Hard to say without more information. What is he doing at the surface? Just hanging around or is he on his side? Does he swim normally? Are there live plants in your tank? What temperature is it? If you have it on the cool side for the corys (like lower 70s) the betta will be less active than he would be at the higher temps he prefers (78-80). It isn't abnormal for a betta to like to stay near the top of the tank.

What have you been feeding and how long has he refused to eat? Bettas like a varied diet so trying other kinds of food may help.

  2. Put it in a separate bowl and feed betta "balls" which you can find at your local pet store or order online at Petco.com. He should be fine after that.

There is no need for a filter in the bowl because they have lungs and breathe from the surface.

    Hope this helps.
