Nielsen Varoy grabs Men’s 50m butterfly gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Nielsen Varoy of Roskill Swimming Club grabbed gold medal of the Men’s 50m butterfly on opening day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Sunday, March 17.
The 21-year-old Varoy showed no mercy to his opponents in the shortest butterfly event as he sprinted his way towards the finishing end for gold medal. With his commendable pace, he managed to gain a lead of one arm length over his toughest competitor and
secured the title.
He experienced strong resistance from his following swimmer and hit the finishing end for first position with an effort of 24.49 seconds.
She was traced by Gareth Kean of Capital Swim Club, who was 0.18 seconds away from his toughest challenger and surfaced on the wall for silver medal with an effort of 24.67 seconds.
The second best finisher was trailed by Paul Benson of Heretaunga Sindevils, who remained 0.19 seconds away from his former finisher and surfaced on the wall for third position by posting an effort of 24.86 seconds.
Fourth position of the race was obtained by Adam McDonald of Roskill Swimming Club, who was 0.07 seconds slower and transpired on the finishing end with the timing of 24.93 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Ashley Townsend of Fairfield Swimming Club and Kurt Crosland of Neptune Swimming Club, who engaged each other in a neck-to-neck race for fifth position.
The duo failed to overpower each other over the finishing end and ended their swims with identical timings of 25.22 seconds for fifth place.
Seventh best spot of the race was obtained by Kurt Bassett of Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club, who suffered a deficit of only 0.19 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing end with the timing of 25.41 seconds.
Eighth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Matthew Hutchins of Wharenui, who concluded his race in eighth place by producing a time of 25.71 seconds.
In addition, Nielsen received a huge round of applause from the audience for his astonishing efforts and collected medals at the prize ceremony of the event.
