Nigel Clough demands his future at Derby County be put second to players
Nigel Clough has issued a surprising statement to his club by saying he will ignore a new contract at Derby County until the future of key players has been sorted out.
Derby is currently fourth place on the Championship table and the club is enjoying a tremendous spell of form with six wins in eight weeks. Rumours of a new deal for the boss are growing but Clough says
his players are more important than anything else.
"I wouldn't contemplate a new contract before all members of my support staff [including players] have signed theirs.
But before that we have got several player negotiations to sort out.
When we were in the bottom three six weeks ago I was supposed to be out the door!" said Clough.
This is a clear message from the manager, which should encourage the club to consolidate and push on.
A positive statement
This is a very clever and positive statement from Clough because it eradicates the risk of any friction between himself, other staff and the players in the football club.
The players are going to be more willing to give everything for the club and the manager if they see their boss taking a back seat and putting every other individual first.
The statements from Clough will allow all of the key officials within the football club to divert and focus their attention on one area. This means the club will have a
better chance of organising contracts for better players in a shorter amount of time.
"The gaffer puts other people first. This is someone who can go to the top. I've worked with a number of managers and Nigel is up
there with the best. I don't think people realise the job Nigel has done here," added club captain Robbie Savage.
Betting advice
Derby is looking like on of the strongest teams in the Championship. The top of the table is being dominated by Cardiff and Queens Park Rangers but Derby is worth a punt
for automatic promotion.
