Nigel Davies nearing the exit door – Rugby News Update
Nigel Davies, the 47-year-old current coach of the Scarlets and former Wales player is nearing the exit door, and rumours are rife that he is set to take up the position of director of rugby at Gloucester.
Negotiations are ongoing between the Scarlets and Gloucester to decide the compensation package, as Davies still has a year to run on his contract. He took over at the club in May 2008, after the unexpected departure of Phil Davies, and if he moves, it will
bring the curtain down on a four-year stint with the Wales club.
His chief executive, Mark Davies, has stated that the club believes in respect, which also means respecting the individuals at the club. He said, "Our values as a business are very clear. One of those values is very much respect and respect involves respecting
the individual.”
"We're pretty consistent. We don't comment on players, we don't comment on other people's business and we don't comment on coaches.”
"At the moment we are very happy with the coaching team that we've got for next year."
Davies has been a success at the club. He took over the reins at a crucial time, and he guided the team to the league play-offs in 2011 and 2012, along with two Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finals in three seasons.
He also successfully brought through players, such as Rhys Priestland, Jonathan Davies, Scott Williams, Josh Turnbull, George North, Aaron Shingler and Ben Morgan. They have gone to play international rugby.
Davies has been a former Wales international. He represented his country 29 times, starting 28 of those games, playing as a centre. He made his debut against New Zealand at Auckland, on June 11, 1988, and made his final bout for his country against England
at Cardiff, on March 15, 1997. For a short while he was the assistant Wales coach under Gareth Jenkins and was appointed the interim coach on his departures.
To further his coaching ambition he wants to move to Gloucester and that will leave a big void for the Scarlets. It will be difficult to bring in a coach that will be able to command authority like Davies.
