Nigel Worthington is unhappy with Northern Ireland players
Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington was disappointed after his side could only manage a draw against the Faroe Islands.
The Faroe Islands team have a number of part-time players and Northern Ireland were expected to be comfortable winners.
The Northern Ireland manager realised that the result was poor, but that they have started the campaign well despite this latest set-back.
Worthington said, “We could have had seven points at this time and that would have been very nice."
"Having five points with two away games so far is not disappointing, but it could have been better," he added.
His team had started the qualifiers with a 1-0 away win to Slovenia and a 0-0 draw at home to Italy before they visited the Faroe Islands.
The Northern Ireland boss was highly critical of his team and said, "I'm pleased to be coming away with a point after that performance as we could've lost all three. The mindset is a wonderful thing. If it is not attuned right to what you are doing then
that's what can happen.”
Worthington was disappointed by the display and continued, "You are off the mark, sloppy in your passing, the energy levels are not there and that was us in this game."
However, the Faroe Island manager and former Republic of Ireland manger Brian Kerr praised his team for their performance against superior opposition.
"We were always going to be under pressure, with some of the class players they have," said Kerr.
"It was a brave performance. I think we at least deserved a point. It's a very, very good day. I had a couple of good days last year, when we beat Lithuania it was a great day.”
"Being from Ireland and having so many relations in Ireland, my parents are from Belfast. Many people in Ireland will have watched the game," added Kerr.
Worthington will have to reorganise his team for their next qualifier in March.
