Nigel Worthington warns Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington has warned his side not to be complacent as they prepare to take on the Faroe Islands in their European Championship qualifier.
Worthington’s side drew 1-1 against Italy in Friday’s qualifying game and will look to take three points away from home against the Faroe Islands.
Captain Aaron Hughes insisted that Northern Ireland will have to earn their result and said, "...these are the games where if you don't perform, then a nasty shock awaits.”
“People just think it will be another win for us and seven points on the board. We are expected to do well against the Faroes because they've lost every game,” added the defender.
Worthington is aware that Faroe Island manager Brian Kerr will be familiar with the Northern Irish side, and will be aiming to pick up their first points of the campaign after losing their opening games.
Northern Ireland has taken four points from their two games and will expect to pick up another three points Tuesday evening, October 12.
But Worthington knows that the good work and the point achieved at Windsor Park will be scant consolation if his side doesn't win to join Italy at the top of the group with seven points.
The Northern Ireland manager said, "We are well aware of what we need to do and of what they can do. There is an opportunity, if we do our jobs right, that we could be leaving with seven points on the board and that is what we want,"
Worthington pointed out that his team will have to be professional in their approach, as they are taking on a team that includes a number of amateur players.
“Our approach has to be spot on. We want to do the job and get out. It will not be easy," said Worthington.
