Nigerian beach volleyball team suffers from bad feeding in the camp – Volleyball news
Nigerian beach volleyball team, which is currently training for Olympic Qualifying Tournament in the capital city Abuja, is having a tough time.
A total of eight players are training at the camp, which has not provision of food, water or essential gear to train with. The team skipper, Kayode Agirore, cried out to the National Sports Commission (NSC) over the pitiable conditions of the camp.
He said, “The eight players currently in camp have been abandoned by the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) and left in starvation. We are dying here slowly unknown to the commission. Let me use this medium to tell Nigerians we are not here on our own,
we are here to represent the country and do her proud in London.”
He further added, “We are begging the NSC to come to our rescue. We have been abandoned by the federation to starve.”
Agirore also pleaded the NSC to arrange some training tour for team and also to organise friendly matches that would enable the players to do well at the Olympic Qualifiers slated for next month in Mauritius. He further implored that this is the high time
that the National Sports Commission should pay attention to the matter. The players need to get exposed to the new model equipment ahead of the important tournament.
Previously Nigeria’s beach volleyball team brightened its chances of playing at the 2012 London Olympic Games with a great performance in the zonal phase, which took place in Abuja last year.
The African zonal phase tournament was attended by eight countries. Gambia, Congo, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Cave-Verde, and Nigeria competed for the Olympic berths. Nigeria did pretty well and kept its Olympics hopes alive.
Back then the chairman of the Nigeria Beach Volleyball Committee, Musa Nimrod, assured full support for the male and female teams. He expressed confident that the Nigerian players have the potential to earn tickets to the Olympic Games.
However, the current conditions in the training camp show that the Nigerian National Sports Commission need to take some immediate steps for improvement. The players should be provided with training gear and problems such as food and water should be take
care of.
