  1. If you have more than 10 hours of layover in Japan, maybe you can opt to take the following trains to go to Tokyo.

If you have a great amount of disposable cash, taxi would be ideal.  However, be prepared for traffic on the Higashi-Kanto Expressway toward Tokyo (as well as Shuto Expressways around Tokyo)

    1. JR Narita Express (expensive, but you will arrive at Tokyo  in 1 hour)

    2. JR Yokosuka Line/Airport Rapid Service (cheaper, but it will take about 1.5 hours to Tokyo)

    3. Keisei Skyliner (cheaper than JR lines and arrive at Ueno Station in 1 hour/very close to Tokyo)

If you can brave staying up all night or sleep very little, you can hop on subways or JR trains and go around Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, and Roppongi areas for nightlife.

Just be careful when traveling back to the airport, because you will need at least 2 to 3 hours to check in at airport (foreign or domestic flights)

  2. Narita is a small town and has nothing other than Airport.

It's better for you to stay at Airport.

  3. It's not close - but you could easily get a bus into Tokyo from Narita and back, or even a cab if you're feeling wealthy! Why waste the chance to visit the most amazing city on earth?
