Question:

Nightmare?

I have to write a nightmare story. I want it to be based in Victorian era. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't want to use trains because that's used in a lot of stories already.

Something like mills? New inventions? Industrial revolution?

Story can be set anywhere in the United Kingdom. Please give examples of similes, metaphors, personification etc that I could use in my story.

Please give a brief story outline if you can based on an idea set in the Victorian era.

Help really appreciated.

  1. A vampire in Victorian style clothes floating through an open window in a foggy haze.

  2. Have you heard of New Lanark?

Im pretty sure thats what it was called.  But either way, it was a town up in Scotland that was basically centred around factories.

There were cotton mills etc and machines such as the spinning jenny etc.  It was, actually, quite a great place where people were able to earn a living and were housed and their lives were quite OK for that time.  However, for a nightmare story I was thinking you could maybe describe the nightmares of a bullied young child at school/ work because only the richer children really went to school!  either way he or she could have a really evil teacher or boss and difficult family problems etc.

There are plenty of things you could write about, just take an aspect, such as picking up the cotton that was lying on the factory floors from underneath the machines and pretend the child was scared etc.

hope that helps and check out the net for info on new lanark!

Oh and Scotland has a colourful history of ghost stories, you could tie that into the nightmare by saying something like the ghost haunted her dreams or something.... lol
