Nike want LeBron James to sign with New York?
The LeBron sweepstakes are continuing and everyone is making their pitch for his services. Barack Obama has chipped in and so has New York mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Now Nike president Charlie Denson has had his say but it’s not what you might have expected. Nike say they are “okay” with any team LeBron decides to play for.
Speculation has been that Nike prefers LeBron to sign in a big market such as New York because of the marketing opportunities, but publically speaking Nike doesn’t care where LeBron ends up.
"One of the most talked about events in basketball right now is free agency," Denson said.
"Obviously LeBron is a big part of that ... It's great for the game. I think where LeBron winds up is totally up to LeBron. We'll all support him. He wants to put himself in the best position to win. That's the most important part. LeBron will try to pick the best place where he can win. Wherever that is, we're OK with that."
Cleveland of course can offer James the most money in free agency, but Nike can offer him big incentives to move to New York. Watch this space.
