Niki Lauda believes Sergio Perez has potential to achieve greatness – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, Niki Lauda has said that Sergio Perez of Sauber has got the potential to achieve greatness after seeing his performance in the Italian Grand Prix.
Perez secured an inspiring second podium finish in the previous race held at Autodromo di Monza after passing Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and impressed everyone with his tremendous pace.
After watching the Italian GP, Lauda said that the Mexican driver has impressed him more than any other contender in the season so far.
“In Italy Perez drove like a god and this in the truest sense of the word,” 63-year-old Lauda told Swiss newspaper Blick. “Unemotionally and without error. No driver has impressed me more than this season in a grand prix.”
In addition, the three-time world champion said that the youngster has truly got some extraordinary talent in him with which he will receive prominence in the world of F1.
“Perez certainly has the potential for bigger things but that does not mean he is going to Ferrari,” he added.
The 22-year-old surely deserves to be called as one of the most talented drivers in the field. He has proven himself as a competent contender in this year’s championship fight as he has secured three podium finishes in the season until now.
Although, he has not been very consistent with his pace, nevertheless, he has got the abilities to secure a good position in this championship battle.
It will be important to mention that after he secured an incredible second podium finish in the Malaysian GP behind Alonso, he was linked with Ferrari as a probable replacement of Massa who has struggled in most of the races this year.
Conversely, the president of Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo has recently said that Perez is too young for a race seat in their team. Meanwhile, there have been a lot of reports which are now linking him with McLaren as Lewis Hamilton’s contract with the Woking
based team is going to expire at the end of this season.
Let’s see what happens with the teams’ driver line-ups in the coming year.
