Niki Lauda believes it will be too early to consider Sebastian Vettel world champion – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, Niki Lauda believes that it will be too early to consider Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing world champion as the 2012 Formula 1 season has been full of surprises until now and anything can happen in the remaining four races.
Vettel has struggled with some technical issues in his car in few races of the ongoing season so far. Nonetheless, he has performed tremendously well and has been deemed as the most favourite title contender.
Moreover, he is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 215 points after claiming his third consecutive victory in the Korean Grand Prix. Besides, he is now 6 points ahead of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who had been at the top of the standings for
most of the time in this season.
Even though, the veteran German driver seems to be unbeatable now but Lauda has said that keeping the unpredictable nature of the season in mind, it is very hard to make any kind of projections about who will dominate in the forthcoming races.
“At the moment everything is going in Vettel’s favour, but it would be premature to celebrate the world championship yet,” triple world champion Lauda told Osterreich newspaper.
“Not long ago Alonso looked like the safe world champion, but he was shot down twice. It shows how fast things can turn around,” he said.
Therefore, he insisted that the defending champion must be very careful about the season ahead in order to win the championship title.
“So Vettel needs to be careful,” he added.
Though, the 25-year-old has been considered as the strongest title contender after winning the preceding race, nevertheless, he still expressed that they need to keep on working hard to defend their title as the competition is very tough. He also said that
he is keenly looking forward to win his fourth consecutive race at Buddh International Circuit this weekend.
“I loved the track layout last year, but not just because I won the race,” said Vettel. “With an average speed of 235km/h, the course is the second quickest of the year after Monza.”
