Niki Lauda insists Fernando Alonso’s rivals must strike back in 2012 Belgian GP – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, Niki Lauda has said that 2012 Belgian Grand Prix is the time for the Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso’s rivals to strike back in order to fight for the championship title this year.
Alonso is presently at the top of drivers’ standings with 164 points and has performed relentlessly well in the first half of the season. Moreover, he has a strong lead over his major competitors which include Red Bull Racing pair of drivers, Mark Webber
and Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.
Lauda said that he is hoping for a tremendous race at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps this weekend. Furthermore, he thinks that if Alonso’s opponents want to win the championship title, they must fight back in the next two races.
"We can expect a spectacular weekend at Spa," Lauda told Austria's Osterreich newspaper as F1 headed towards the end of its summer break. "For [Sebastian] Vettel, [Lewis] Hamilton and the others, it is now decision time. Now there is the need to score points
- if they are not the frontrunners at Spa and Monza, Alonso will be gone."
The current season has been quite surprising as there is no team or driver which has entirely dominated as compared to the preceding one in which the defending champion, Vettel scored 11 race victories.
In addition, where on one side the unpredictable nature of the season has created a thrill for the spectators, on the other hand, it has been quite shocking for the contenders as they are getting confused with the present state of the championship positions.
Besides, the three-time world champion said that he is very much delighted to see that the races are starting again after a long summer break. Over and above, he said that he is keenly looking forward to witness how all the contenders performs in the challenging
conditions of the track of the approaching race.
"Thank god we at least had the Olympics since the last race, otherwise it would have become really boring," the 63-year old mused.
Let’s see how all the drivers come up in the season ahead.
