Nikki Garrett can atone for past lapses in India
Australian Nikki Garrett has what it takes to win the battle at Hero Women’s Indian Open, but she will have to avoid the mistakes that have kept her winless since 2007.
Garrett is one of the strongest contenders at the three-round Ladies European Tour (LET) tournament, scheduled to kick off from November 30, at DLF Golf & Country Club, but a long winning
drought has dented her reputation in the past few years.
It remains to be seen how the Aussie golfer regains her lost charisma this week, but she is likely to capitalise on her experience and try to finish off the tournament in grand style.
Her performance in the 2012 season has been worse than average as she missed cut in seven tournaments—something enough to overshadow her rock-solid performance in the 2007 season, which saw
her notch up two LET titles.
Garrett displayed a stellar performance at the 2007 Tenerife Ladies Open, as she defeated English Trish Johnson and Spanish Tania Elosegui by two strokes.
It was a solid victory in every sense because she was not expected to crush big names in the field. Then in the same year, the LET titan grabbed her second title at the Open De Espana Femenino.
Observers said that the Australian star can atone for past lapses at the 2012 Indian Open as she knows the course well. Moreover, the weather conditions are forecast to remain favourable throughout
the three days, which may help her gain a big score early in the opening round.
The last tournament of the season, Sanya Ladies Open, did not go as well as she had planned, because she failed to judge the ball on the greens and ended up shooting a total score of 222 to
settle for a share of 52nd position.
Swedish Caroline Hedwall is in the news once again as she is the defending champion of the tournament. Observers said that Hedwall is able to tear apart the entire lineup because she is pretty
much familiar with the course conditions.
Sharing her thoughts while speaking to the media during her pre-tournament interview on Wednesday, the defending champion said that could not believe when she finally saw her name on top of
the leaderboard last year.
But she was keen to point out that her short game was exceptionally well, helping her remain in contention till the last hole.
