Nikki Harris bagged her first overseas victory of the season at the Superprestige Gavere 2012
Nikki Harris of Team Young Telenet-Fidea Cycling wins the Superprestige Gavere Elite Women category of the race after her astonishing performance on Sunday.
She took a total time of 10 minutes and 29 seconds to overcome her major opponents and secured the top podium position at the event.
The British National Mountain Bike Champion had a couple of near misses in the 2012 season and a top podium position at the recent race will definitely boost her confidence for the remaining part of the season.
Dutch cyclist, Sanne van Paassen of Team Rabobank Women finished 18 seconds behind at the second position with Sanne Cant of Team Veldritacademie Enertherm-BKCP securing the third spot.
Sophie de Boer of Team Young Telenet-Fidea and Ellen Van Loy of Team Melbotech Prorace CT occupied the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
“It was very motivating knowing there was a chance to win. It’s nice to win by a bit of a margin. I enjoy riding here. The course has a bit of everything in it,” Harris noted after winning the race.
“There are a lot of different winners these days. Maybe that will change once Marianne Vos returns to competition next weekend. I need to get as much wins as I can before she returns”.
“This is no course for me. I could not come back on Harris. I wasn’t able to develop my power on the course,” Van Paassen told Cyclingnews.
The Dutch noted that Harris was too good for the three of them (Paassen, Cant and Sophie de Boer) and once the lead was extended to over ten seconds, she realised that it was not possible to catch Harris back.
Once she extended the lead, it was a clear line ahead of the British as she cruised across the finish-line claiming her first overseas victory of the season.
Sabrina Stultiens, Amy Dombroski, Pavla Havlikova, Joyce Vanderbeken and Githa Michiels occupied the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth positions in the respective order.
On the other hand, Sven Nys of Team Landbouwkrediet-KDL wins the men’s category of the race after his impressive finish in 1 minute and 3 seconds.
Klaas Vantornout of Team Sunweb-Revor, Bart Wellens of Team Telenet-Fidea, Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor and Rob Peeters of Team Telenet-Fidea occupied the second, third, fourth and fifth positions in the respective order.
